Film Lesson: "The Right Stuff"

The movie "The Right Stuff" is about the Cold War. Specifically the space race. Russia and the United States of America were fighting for control of outer space. It started when America broke the sound barrier. Then Russia sent a satellite. America and Russia then were both trying to get life up outer space. America technically did the first life in outer space. But it was a monkey. When Russia sent up a live human a couple of weeks later, America was ashamed. America got revenge a little later by sending the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong. 

Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) and the Modernization of Turkey.

After the fall of the Ottaman Empire Mustafa Kemal wanted to make Turkey a modernized Muslim country. He wanted the Turkish people to be considered civilized among their European neighbors. His main focus was on how the people dressed. He got rid of the Fez (A commonly warn red headpeice) and made everyone wear hats. He also wanted the Turkish people to wear pants, shirt, ties and women stopped wearing  veils. He also got rid of the Islamic calendar and replaced it  with the western calendar. 

The Russian Revolution

Shortly after the start of WWI, Russia revolted against their czar. They had just entered WWI and were being destroyed by the Germans, They lost almost 5,000,000 men by 1916. They were short on both food and weaponry. They were also still a big farming country. There weaponry was no match for german machine guns. A man named Vladimier Lenin lead the Boshevik, or communist part to overthrough czar Nicholas II to take Russia out of the world war. They gave up a small chunk of land to german to do so though. The Boshevik had a motto 'Peace Land and Bread" which meant they wanted out of WWI they wanted land for farming and they wanted bread to eat.

Causes for WWI

WWI was the result of many nations trying to be the top. Germany, Russia, Great Britian, France and Austria-Hungary all built up their military trying to have the biggest and best military around. Germany also tried to become the top industrial country in the world. In the middle of all of this. A serbian guy assassinated the leader of Austria-Hungary and Germany tried to force their way through The Netharlands an ally of Great Britian. Austria then proceded to invade Serbia, a close ally of Russia. Russia then declared war on Germany and Britian and France were soon to follow.

Film Lessons: "Mountains of the Moon"

The English faced many problems while finding the source of the Nile, they went through disease and long travels. Both Richard Burton and John Speke suffered major problems. Richard Burton got a spear through his face and elephanttitus and John Speke got deaf in one ear and tourted by African natives. They also traveled about 6 months both ways over run rocky terrain they ran low on supplies because some of there people deserted them.

Also when they did find the source of the Nile they decided to name the lake Victoria. This is strange because they only found the lake for England. There were already African Natives living around the lake this is an example of Imperialism.

The reason the English had such an easy time trying to conquer parts of Africa is becuase the English had advanced equipment such as guns. They could easily survive the rough African terrains. 

Karl Marx and The Industrail Revolution

Karl Marx was a German Jew who looked down on the Industrial Revolution. He thought that the machines were controling people and making them do work so much they would go crazy. He also didn't like how the bosses and CEO's would sit down and do little to nothing and get paid more then all the hard workers. After a while he devoloped an economic plan called communism It made it so all the people would get the same exact payroll as everyone else. Now Communism didn't even start officially until after his 1883 death but it first was brought to Russia and is now not used in Russia but used in Cuba, China and North Korea.

Nationalism and The Creation of Italy

Nationalism is the concept of having diffrent divided land, Countrys, States, Continents, etc. It is everything unique about an area of land. Their traditions, currency, holidays, food, launguage, religion and history. Im Nationalistic by being an American citizen and using the American dollar, the American Launguage and celebrating American holidays like the 4th of July.

Italy was one of the many countries part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, then with war, the Empire lost half of its land. Then with fear, the Empire started to split up even more in to countries. People of common Launguage split up and formed goverments and laws. Thus, Nationalism was born.
